Charcoal Group buys Solé restaurant

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Two restaurant groups with more than 100 years of combined experience in the hospitality industry in Waterloo Region have struck a major business deal.

Kitchener’s Charcoal Group of Restaurants has purchased Solé Restaurant and Wine Bar, a Cerny Hospitality Group brand that opened in 1999 with a Mediterranean-based cuisine.

Owner John Cerny said the timing of the sale was right for the long-established uptown Waterloo restaurant that emerged from the worst of the pandemic lockdowns in good shape, adding that the restaurant’s name will remain.

“Solé will continue as Solé with the current team and will operate under the new ownership and leadership of the Charcoal Group. We are confident that together with the Solé team they will build on the foundation and continue the legacy we have built over the last 24 years,” said Cerny.

The iconic building across from the CIGI Campus on Erb Street West was once a maintenance garage on the former Seagram properties. Extensively renovated by the Cerny group, its 150-year-old beam, post and brick interior and 130-seat dining room have bright natural light that streams in through the many windows and a secluded streetside summer patio.
