Every plate counted: so long Jake & Humphreys’

Passersby will miss the blackboard sign on the porch at Jake & Humphreys’ Bistro on Peel Street.

The iconic and beloved New Hamburg restaurant has its last service Friday (Sept. 30), when the owners retire. That means that the sign’s wisecracks and raillery — its wit and often sage but ironic advice — is likely retiring, too.

“People say they plan their walks around town to pass the sign and see what it says,” according to Klaus Ristanovic, bistro co-owner and co-chef with Janet Duncan.
